Hawkeye fans return home after victory

orange bowlA sea of black and gold today at the Eastern Iowa Airport as happy Hawk fans returned on charter flights from a victorious trip to Florida.

Some Hawk fans say the cool temps in usually sunny Florida caught them off guard.

“I was hoping it would be like 70 you know but we made do,” said Louann Helmle of Dubuque.

Danice Borglum of Waverly explained that her family bundled up for the game and work dread lock hats in support of Adrian Clayborn.

“I don’t know if we ever sat down,” explained Borglum.  “It was the best game.”

Marlene Janssen said the Florida weather was windy, damp, and cold but she had a great time.

And Phyllis Schillig agreed that the game was a lot of fun but that it would “a few days before (her) feet get warm again.”

Warming up will not be easy to do with a new winter storm expected to bring more snow and wind to Eastern Iowa.

Fans, like Mike Borglum, describe the weather here at home as “about as bad as it was when we left” though he had hoped it would warm up while he was gone.

While staying in a somewhat warmer Florida would have been nice for Danice Borglum she admits coming home – despite frigid temperatures – has its perks.

“It’s where our Hawks are from so we have to come back but hopefully they take us warm again next winter,” said Danice.

One woman who has greeted fans coming home from ten bowl games told KCRG Borglum’s sentiment is something she hears frequently: fans plan to travel to a bowl game at the end of next season and say while they might be going to a different destination, they expect the same result.
